About the Tour

Τhe coastal route to Sounio is one of the most beautiful that the visitor could reach within the Attica basin as he crosses and enjoys all the beaches that embrace Attica (Palaio Faliro, Glyfada Voula, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, Agia Marina, Lagonissi, Anavyssos, Saronida, Legranas), offering a wonderful view of the Saronic Gulf. Of particular interest is the Lake of Vouliagmeni (listed in the National Catalog of NATURA 2000 and designated as a Place of Natural Physical Culture by the Ministry of Culture), which is the hidden treasure of Attica nature. Sited in an idyllic
environment the rare geological phenomenon of global reach with the imposing rock, the thermal waters (which are constantly renewed both by the sea and the underground thermal springs), the labyrinthine submarine tunnels of the cave and the lush greenery is profoundly attractive.

At the southernmost point of Attica and just 68 km away from Athens, Cape Sounio is an ideal destination as it combines a visit to the imposing archaeological site of the Temple of Poseidon (built of white marble clay in the 5th century BC on the top of a cliff, rising 60 meters above sea level) and the sanctuary of Athena Sounias northwest of the cape), with the captivating view of the clear Aegean Sea and the wonderful sunsets. In the above archaeological site, access hours are from 10:00 am until the sunset, while the entry ticket is 4€ standard and 2€ reduced.

The next station and about 10 km after Sounio is Lavrion (a jewel of the Attica land), which in ancient times was famous for its mineral wealth and in the course of time it evolved into one of the largest mining centers in the world. Lavrio is a historic city with its own color, which is recognized by the imposing neoclassical buildings of its quaint past, by its picturesque harbor and more generally by the image of the former abandoned industrial city that has been reborn in recent years, through the railway, built in 1884 connecting Lavrion with Athens and the ruins of ancient theater (4th century BC) in the region of Thorikos.
